Optimising images for search traffic

The ability to search for images has been a key feature on the main search engines for several years now since this function was first introduced by Google and AltaVista. Image search can be a valuable resource for users and also provides an additional opportunity for websites to attract relevant traffic to their site, once images are optimised effectively.

Google logos

If you’re a regular user of Google (and who isn’t these days!) you probably noticed the seasonal logos being used before Christmas with cartoon characters integrated with the logo. Google’s sense of fun has meant that these ‘holiday logos’ have been used quite often over the past few years to mark special events and have included some impressive executions of their logo to match the theme.

Microsoft launches new beta search engine

As expected, Microsoft launched the beta version of its new search engine in November. The look of the site is very simple, following the Google model, and the results that it lists so far are quite fragmented, indicating that it has not crawled a great deal of pages yet and the majority of results appear to be US based websites.

Google’s search moves onto the desktop

Google has just launched a ‘beta’ version of its new desktop search engine that operates at a far greater speed than the standard windows search. This is not a new idea as the Copernic desktop search tool was released in August and also the UK-based Blinkx tool has also received much publicity recently. However, crucially Google has rushed their new tool out ahead of similar concepts expected from Microsoft and Yahoo.
