Submitting to the main search engines and directories.

The following tables list the main search engines and directories that you should submit your site to, including the submission page links and comments. (Please note that all links open in a new window.)

Some submissions can only be made by payment, or there is the option to speed up submission by paying to include your site. Please refer to the notes next to each search tool, or contact us for more details.

Directories require a different submission process and more information, including a site description.

1) Search engines:

These search tools are automated indexes and use 'spiders' to visit a site and index many pages, so optimised content can enable a site to rank well for a range of search terms. Many search engines now offer paid inclusion schemes, but free submissions do still exist as well.

For free submissions it is usually only possible to submit to  worldwide engines, these however will include your site in UK listings provided you have a UK domain or your IP address originates from the UK.

2) Directories:

A directory is a human-compiled database, with websites added to one or more relevant categories, listed with a short description and linked to the Home Page. Ranking opportunities can be more limited as these will be dependent on the keywords used in the site (company) name and description.

Directory Submissions Comments
Looksmart (US) Pay-per-click scheme Offer a number of paid schemes, including a standard directory listing for 15 cents click-through.
Open Directory Project Free submit from subject category Use 'Add URL' link from top of relevant category.
Yahoo (US) Paid submit from subject category Use 'Suggest a Site' link at the base of the relevant category. Business sites submit for $299 (annual recurring fee)
Yahoo (UK) Paid submit from subject category Use 'Suggest a Site' link at the base of the relevant category. Business sites submit for £199 (once-only charge)

3) Pay-per-click search tools:

These are advertising tools, allowing websites to 'buy' ranking positions within the sponsored results of many leading search tools. They enable websites to bid for numerous search terms and listings can appear within days. However, placement will be dependent on the competitive market and budgets, so that they could be used for short-term campaigns or to supplement 'free' rankings.
